Ecobank Ghana has presented 25 needy-but-brilliant BECE graduates at La Nkwantanan, in the Madina Municipality with scholarships to pursue their senior high school education.

The scholarships formed part of a GHC600,000 package Ecobank doled out in various social responsibility activities to mark this year's 25th Anniversary edition of the annual Ecobank Day, which falls every last Saturday of October every year.

The day is set aside every year for Ecobank group of companies to give back to the communities in which they operate, and this year the bank undertook a number of laudable projects including scholarships to the 25 pupils who scored between aggregates six and nine.

Most of for pupils have already gained admission into top senior high schools in the country, including Wesley Girls High School, Mfantsiman Girls High School, Ola Girls, Mawuli Senior High School, and Pope Jones Senior High School among others.

Ecobank also gave 20 computers to the La Nkwantanan Cluster of four schools, plus a mechanized borehole, with a treatment plant and two water tankers, which addresses a lingering water shortage in the schools.

As part of activities for the day, Ecobank also provided seven other mechanized boreholes to various needy communities and institutions across the country.

The beneficiaries include Princess Marie Louis Children's Hospital, Ketu South Municipal Hospital, Kpintariga Community in Tamale, Zongo Community in Sunyani, Kenyasi Community Basic School in the Brong Ahafo region, Abenaso Community and Tafo Government Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Dzorwulu Special School also got plastic chairs, sewing machines, hair dryers and computers; Accra Psychiatric Hospital got hospital mattresses arms mosquito nets, Tarkwa Government Hospital got an Incubator, and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital got buckets of paint, CPAP equipment and other consumables.

Executive Director for Legal, Human Resource and Compliance at Ecobank Ghana, Morgan Asiedu said Ecobank Day is being observed in all 36 countries where the bank operates with the view to contributing to the development of Africa and its peoples.

He said the choice of projects this year, was aimed at reaching out to the millions of children in Africa who are unable to live in dignity and realize their full potential because of socio-economic impediments.

Morgan Asiedu believes the projects reflects Ecobank's commitment as a Pan-African bank to facilitate the development of future leaders for Africa, something, he said, the bank will continue to do many years to come.

Head of PR and Communications, Ecobank Ghana and West Africa, Rev. Patricia Sarpong told Adom News, beside the Ecobank Day donations this year, the bank has been doing loads of charity activities throughout the year to mark its 25th Anniversary this year.

She mentioned 1000 pints of blood donated in partnership with MTN, sponsored heart surgery for several kids, adopted kids at the Village of Hope at Gomoa Fetteh, refurbishment of Korle - Bu X-ray machine, which Ecobank bought some time back, sponsored medical students to train abroad, and support for various educational institutions "and this is not the end for this year."

Madina Municipal Director of Education, Elizabeth Oduro-Mensah expressed gratitude to Ecobank for the support, but pointed out that the La Nkwantanan Cluster of Schools still need more classrooms because currently one teacher handles up to 50 pupils in a class instead of 30.

She said if the schools get more classrooms they can employ teachers and apportion fewer pupils to a teacher to ensure effective teaching and learning.
