Thousands of the residents of Nyankrom and surrounding communities in the Shama District of the Western Region have been provided free medical care by Zeal Environmental Technologies (ZETL), an indigenous oil and gas waste management service company operating in the area.
The move was to strengthen the bond between the community and the company as well as encourage sustainable social harmony for future development.
Speaking to the JOYMEWS, the Chief Executive Officer of ZETL, and Mr. Kwaku Ennin said partnering with host communities for development was not an event but sustained effort which must not be ignored.
The two-day screening took care of adults from 70 years and above, youth as well as children. The team of medical doctors, pharmacists and nurses from Christian Medical Mission Resource Foundation and accompanied by ministers of the Gospel.
“As a Ghanaian own company on the Industrial enclave of the district, our focus is not purely on the profit, but we follow the basic principle of ensuring safe environment, our internal and external public before anything else,” he said.
“Much as people want investments, these investments must take into consideration issues that would reflect the environment they are operating and ZETL is committed to that.”
Mr. Ennin said ZETL was aware of the importance of healthy population, which represents the most important asset of every nation and that the move to provide healthcare was due to an engagements community which health was one of the paramount issues.
“We are not only going to provide them with healthcare and go but be referred to the VRA-Hospital at Aboadze after which the company will take care of the bills,” he said.
Mr. Ennin said as the world moves in the direction of more conscious stakeholders, organizations such as ZETL voluntarily tilting towards the issues of sustainability and how to create the environment that will ensure that the future still remains the property of the generation yet unborn through responsible social and corporate governance.
The Queenmother of the town Nana Akosua Gyamfiabah II commended the company for the project and thanked the board and management of ZEAL Environmental Technologies Limited for supporting the health needs of her people and the entire Shama Township.
The nearest healthcare facility to the residents of the town is the Shama hospital. This makes access to quality healthcare a real challenge for the people.
Nana Gyamfiabah who is also the acting Queen Mother of the Shama Traditional Council asked the board of ZETL to help construct a health post for the community as a more sustainable means to addressing some of the health needs of the people.
The medical team checked various ailments and also took members of the community through counseling and other healthy lifestyle to ensure good health and increased productivity.
Some residents commended the company for their gesture, some were of the view that, they had some health problems that they were aware of but the problem was that they did not have enough money to go to the hospital or renew the health insurance cards.
