On Sunday at the Accra Sports stadium, African Champions TP Mazembe defeated the Ghana Dream Team 3-1 to win this year’s MO Ibrahim foundation Governance Cup, but the lighting situation at the stadium took the shine off what had been until that point a decent game of exhibition when just after 30 minutes in the second half the game had to be stopped by the referee because the stadium was getting darker.
All this happened under the eyes of President John Dramani Mahama, Mo Ibrahim himself and Moise Katumbi, who is president of TP Mazembe.
Primeval Consult, organizers of the football game, pulled a spectacular show with general coordination of the game but their communications director was disappointed by the turn out of events at the latter stages of the game
"It is a national disaster, it is a shame that in the 21st century and a country like Ghana that has been able to blaze the trail when it comes to sports on the African continent cry of lack of floodlight, it is a disgrace,” said communications director of Primeval Jeffery Asare
"We need to get it fixed as soon as possible and it was good that the President was here, he has seen it himself but he has so many things on his mind so that is why there is a Minister of Sports and a National Sports Authourity director, the appointments they give them is not for them to go and sit in their office to crack jokes."
"I challenge them to fix this."
Despite the setback, CK Akunnor who was head coach of the Dream Team highlighted the positives but said the floodlight issue could have been averted.
“This is not a good thing because this game was going all over the world if i am wrong you can correct me,”
“For us to experience something like this which has been reoccurring I think the people in charge should take control.”
