Seven inmates at the Kaneshie police are under investigation for allegedly assaulting another inmate, leading to his eventual death.
The deceased, Kingsford Mensah was said to have had an “unusual body marks” at the time he was granted bail on Monday.
He was soon rushed to the Ridge Hospital after what family members say were traces of an abnormal behavior but was pronounced dead on Tuesday.
Chief Superintendent Avadechie, divisional commander of the Kaneshie Police Station told Joy News preliminary investigations reveal the deceased was assaulted in the police cells.
Kingsford Mensah, 27 and one another accomplice was arrested on Saturday, 17 April, 2010 after a complainant, Helen Okyere accused them of stealing her floor tiles.
According to the divisional commander his outfit has taken caution statements for the seven accused persons alleged to have assaulted the deceased and would be processed for court soon.
Asked why the police personnel on duty did not notice the assault incident, Chief Superintendent Avadechie explained the deceased may have been assaulted at the inner chamber of the cell.
He would however not justify the seeming lack of supervision on the part of the police personnel on duty.
Meanwhile the body of Kingsford Mensah has been deposited at the Ridge Mortuary for autopsy.
