The opposition New Patriotic Party has placed its officials on high alert following a dawn raid on its office.
Sources in the police are pointing to supporters aligned with suspended NPP Chairman Paul Afoko as being behind the action.
Mr. Afoko in a statement had condemned the act hours after.
There is no indication who gave the order for the raid which is under investigation.
Some 12 people are currently in police custody. Director of Police Public Affairs, DCOP Nenyi Ampah Benning says the men arrested will be held in custody based on the statements they present.
"Currently their case is being handled at the Police HQ. 12 persons have already been arrested and investigations are being undertaken," he said.
He said the suspects are yet to be charged.
He however denied claims the invasion was masterminded by uniformed men in military and police vehicles. He challenged persons with any such information to provide the police with that information.
DCOP Ampah Bennin said the police have no plans to station men at the HQ until there is a request from the party officials for protection during official programmes or when the police receive any information of wrongdoing.
But for the NPP, their intelligence suggests security vehicles were used in the operation. Nana Akomea who speaks for the party says
The party is shocked that military and police officers could conduct searches without a warrant or knowledge of any party official.
"It can turn out to be a grievous attack on Ghana’s democracy".
