The President of Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE), Ing. Kwaku Boampong has inducted 66 newly qualified Engineers into the corporate membership of the Institution at the Engineers Centre, Roman Ridge, Accra on Wednesday, November 25, 2015.

Ing. Boampong, who chaired the 14th induction ceremony said, “The Ghana Institution of Engineers, as part of its objective to maintain high level of professionalism in the practice of Engineering, examines and licenses Engineers for the practice of the profession in the country. The Engineering student after Graduation from an accredited University or Engineering Institution, enters the profession as a Graduate Engineer, undertakes a minimum of three years supervised training and sits for the Professional Examination conducted by the Institution”.

“On passing the Examination, the candidates are then accepted as Corporate Members of the Institution, that is, professionally qualified member of the Institution”, the President of GhIE added.

“On behalf of Council members, Past Presidents and members of the Ghana Institution of Engineers, I congratulate all inductees and urge you all to be guided by the Ethics of our profession and protect your reputation at all times”, the President of GhIE concluded.

The Special Guest of Honour of the Induction ceremony, Ing. Ato Wright, who spoke on the topic, “Engineering Leadership: An Indispensable Pre-requisite for our National Development” revealed that, “Countries that are posing persistently highest levels of growth rates in the World such as China with over 8% and Malaysia, South Korea with growth rates of over 7% are those whose growth rates are driven by scientific and technological development with Engineers and Technologists playing leading roles and also have the higher enrolment of students in Engineering and Technical Education”.

Ing. Ato Wright, who is a Past President of GhIE recommended that a Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Policy is the single most pressing pre-requisite for the effective deployment of Engineering for accelerated growth and poverty alleviation for sustainable development in our country.

On his part, the Chairman of Membership Committee of GhIE, Ing. Kwabena Bempong explained that a total number of 89 candidates participated in the Professional Examinations, comprising: 51 Civil Technical Division; 12 Mechanical/Agric; 2 Chemical/Mining; 24 Electrical/Electronic.

“Out of these, 66 Candidates were able to present themselves for Induction today, made up of 34 Civil Technical Division; 12 Mechanical/Agric; 2 Chemical/Mining and 18 Electrical/Electronic. I, however, need to state that those who are unable to present themselves today for this induction ceremony will have to seek another opportunity to take the Engineer’s oath before their transfer will take due effect.”, Ing. Bempong said.

The Induction ceremony was well-attended by Council Members, Immediate Past President of GhIE, Ing. Magnus Lincoln Quarshie, who was given the platform to advise the newly inducted Engineers, Past Presidents of GhIE, the President-Elect of GhIE, members of the GhIE, families members of Inductees and the general public.

Ing. Beverly Naa Ameley (Mrs) received a special award in the Civil Technical Division, Ing. Mark Aboagye received a special award in the Electrical/Electronic Technical Division, whilst Ing. Stephen Kwame Afiakwah received a special award in the Mech/Agric/Marine Technical Division.
