Police in Effiduase in the Ashanti Region on Monday clashed with NDC supporters over planned demonstrations on the nomination of District Chief Executive.

The hopes of the party faithfuls to hit the streets against the re-nomination of Kwadwo Adae were dashed when they were ordered to call it off.

District Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police,  Douglas Kumah tells Nhyira News the action was taken swiftly to avert what could have been security breach from potential counter-demonstration.

Nhyira News checks reveal though the leadership of the NDC youth notified police on Sunday of the planned protest; they decided to hit the streets the next morning.

They are angry about the nomination of Mr. Adae who they accuse of stifling party activities in the area.

The embattled former DCE survived similar fate in 2010 when violent protests led to the death of one person.

An ensuing confusion at a meeting to resolve the impasse saw then Regional Minister, Kofi Opoku Manu, running for his life.

Organizers of Monday’s abortive action tell Nhyira Fm the likely confirmation of Mr. Adae could spell doom for the party in the area.

The spokesperson of the group, Bernard Kwakye tells Nhyira Fm Mr. Adae is not a peacemaker who can unite National Democratic Congress supporters.

“This man is not a peace maker. He don’t unite the people. He always rejects NDC members whenever they find any problem and enter his office. We are sure this man is a good leader in our district and we want the President to remove this man [Adae] and bring the one Mr. Owusu Prempeh Akwasi. If not, we are not going to vote in the 2016 for our President Mahama”.   

But the Effiduase police will not allow the angry youth to hit the streets.

District Commander, DSP Douglas Kumah, insists on the mandatory four working day notice to respond to demands of the youth.

He tells Nhyira News the demonstrations could have turned violent as three other groups were preparing to stage counter actions, a situation which force police to halt it.

“I have met several groups of people; one group from Effiduase Zongo saying they would not agree that the people should demonstrate. And then another group from NDC Zongo branch at Asokore also came here that they heard a group of people wanted to demonstrate-they will not agree. And if all these things are going to go against the demonstration, then why should we allow them to do the demonstration? DSP Kumah quizzed.
