Premiership returnees Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs returned to their Cape Coast base on Wednesday to a rousing welcome by townsfolk.
The team gained re-entry to Ghana’s top flight topping its group in this year’s Middle League, picking all the possible points along the way. The players were accompanied by Edward Nana Aidoo, the club chairman, his wife and members of the management team.
The welcome began from Mankesim where some of the enthusiastic supporters had come to await the all-conquering team. From there, supporters lined up the sides of the road waved at the team while those who could, joined the convoy on bikes and in cars.
In Cape Coast, the team’s first point of call was the Regional Minister’s office where they were welcomed by Ama Benyiwa –Doe, the Regional Minister and …the Metropolitan Chief Executive and Osabarima Ewusi, the President of the Regional House of Chiefs.
Madam Benyiwa-Doe congratulated the team and its management for the joy and pride they had brought the town. She said Cape Coast had long wished to have the team back in the Premiership to take its rightful place as one of Ghana’s top teams. Singling out Nana Aidoo for praise, she said given the difficulties that attend fund raising in the country, it was heart-warming to see someone dedicate himself so fully to a project that brought joy to so many.
Responding, Nana Aidoo thanked the Regional Minister and her administration for their support and encouragement. He said he was honoured to be involved with one of the biggest clubs in the country and pledged to continue to support the team and enable it reach even greater heights.
At a brief durbar at the Residency, ecstatic supporters sang and danced to celebrate the return of their favourite team to the premiership.
In brief remarks, the Regional Minister and the Metropolitan Chief Executive congratulated the victorious team and urged their supporters to continue to support the team through its ups and downs.
Taking his turn to address the supporters, Nana Aidoo recounted how Dwarfs won the Middle League by beating Mine Stars, Westham and Medeema to qualify for re-entry to the premiership.
Nana Aidoo assured the supporters that no effort will be spared to ensure that Dwarfs makes a great impact on its return and declared that no team will be allowed to leave the the team’s home base with a point.
He advised the supporters to exercise restraint during and away from matches so as not to dent the image of the club and incur competitive losses by way of punitive deductions.
Nana Aidoo also pledged the support of Dwarfs for their sister team, Venomous Vipers, in their bid to return to the Premiership as Dwarfs had done.
The players and the management proceeded to the Victoria Park through the principal streets of the ancient town accompanied by jubilant supporters and to music from a brass band group. Others waved from their homes and shops while others danced and sang the praises of the players and management.
Amid the jubilation and the shouts of celebration and congratulation, one could sense the spirit of a people rejuvenated and strengthened as Cape Coast, as one, welcomed its gallant sons home with pride and satisfaction. Many declared that the win and the re-entry to the Premier League had given the town a new lease of life and brought its people together.
Prior to their relegation 5 seasons ago, Dwarfs, which has been in existence since 1935 was one of Ghana’s most celebrated football clubs.
