The Minister for Interior Martin Amidu says government can neither confirm nor deny Ghanaian refugee’s status in neighboring Togo. The Interior Minister was in Parliament Tuesday to brief the house on reports that dozens of Ghanaians have crossed into Togo, apparently fleeing violence in the Bunkprugu Yonyoo district. He described the skirmishes in the district as purely intra ethnic conflict amongst jut the Bimoba’s there which left four people dead and about 368 houses destroyed, adding that the issue of Ghanaian refuges in Togo is debatable. International media and the UN refugee agency have reported that about 3000 Ghanaian refugees are in Togo. Government itself has publicly acknowledged its efforts to relocate the refugees. But the Interior Minister told Parliament that he has no details on the number of the refugees – if there are any at all. Mr Amidu said since government is yet to determine the refugee’s status from Togo, any figure bundled in the media should be tagged as speculative. He said life is returning to normalcy in the area and relief items have also been dispatched to the people there. Mr. Amidu told the law makers that government has dispatched another team to Togo to assess the situation to properly clear the misconception surrounding the reportage. The Interior Minister is expected to return to Parliament to answer some questions on his presentation. Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, said the minister needs to tell the house what actually occasioned the conflict or the nature of the dispute, raising doubt about the claims that those in Togo may not be refugees. “So many issues are crying for answers,” he said.
