The country’s security agencies are being urged to launch thorough investigations into a bribery scandal involving Ghana’s Armed Forces and vehicle manufacturer, Daimler.
In a case similar to the Mabey & Johnson scandal, the German carmaker is alleged to have paid bribes and engaged in other corrupt practices in a bid to secure lucrative contracts in several countries between 1997 and 2008.
According to a publication by the Public Agenda newspaper, Daimler told a court in Washington, its agents paid bribes and kick-backs amounting to several millions of U.S. dollars to public officials and their agents in about 22 countries, including Ghana. The paper’s Editor Steve Manteaw has been following the story.
“The focus was not on Ghana. The focus really was on a number of countries but my particular interest and the reason I went to follow up was to see if I could get more information on the Ghana specific case but that was not available.
“So it would take a Ghanaian investigative body that interested” to get to the bottom of it, he said.
