The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has arrested a 29-year old electrician, Mr. Jeremiah Godfred Nortey, who has been parading himself as an officer of the security agency, and duping several unsuspecting Ghanaians.According to our information, Jeremiah Godfred Nortey was grabbed by officials of the BNI last Thursday, when he went to the Passport Office in Accra, to present documents for processing to acquire the newly-introduced biometric passport, in the name of the BNI.Officials of the BNI, who confirmed the arrest to The Chronicle, indicated that Nortey, who has been using the name of the state security agency for sometime now, was this time not lucky when he presented documents with stamps from the BNI, ostensibly to lure Passport Office officials to approve.Mr. L.N. Blankson, an administrator of the BNI who confirmed the arrest, said, "we have been monitoring the actions of some individuals who present themselves as personnel from the BNI and collect huge sums of monies from people to process passport forms for them."This guy went to the passport office with documents perceived to be signed by the BNI, with its stamps to process the passport forms for him, and since officials of the Passport Office see the stamps indicating that it was coming from the BNI, they process it for him. The Deputy Director of Passports drew our attention to this and we arrested him."According to him, after the arrest, Jeremiah confirmed that he ' had been presenting himself as a BNI officer, mostly at the passport office for some time now, because as an electrician who has not been getting jobs, he resorted to that business to make ends meet Jeremiah, a resident of Osu in the Greater Accra Region, is likely to face prosecution, according to the BNI officials."He is currently in our custody. We would be granting him bail to appear every day when actions are taken to prosecute him."Mr. Blankson appealed to the citizenry to be careful of unscrupulous individuals, and urged them, to report people to the security agencies, saying, "he is not part of us.
