Many Ghanaian hearts are beating irregularly as the Black Stars come up against a desperate German side needing nothing but a win to book a place in the last 16 at the ongoing World Cup.Already some passionate Ghanaian supporters are wailing; seeking a Hail Mary to overcome what to them is an impossible task of ditching the Germans and claiming a well deserved place in the round of 16.But hold on! The Aussies are also in Group D. They lie at the bottom with just a point from the game against the Black Stars on Saturday. They need no less than five goals against Serbia in the event of a German win against Ghana or 1-0 victory against Serbia and hope for a huge favour from the Black Stars in a form of victory against Germany. Only then can they boast of a place in the round of 16.In spite of the huge challenge, the Aussies are still hopeful. Call it wishful thinking but they are ready to fight for 90 minutes for a place in the round of 16 even when the odds weigh heavily against them. The Black Stars of Ghana are just the opposite of the Aussies. They lead the group; have their destiny firmly in their hands and need just a draw against Germany to book what looks like the only African slot in the round of 16.Yet many Ghanaians are simply uncomfortable; the holocaustic 6-1 defeat suffered by the Black Stars against Germany in a friendly match in Bochum in 1993 appears fresh on their minds. The Ghanaians are not scoring, except for penalties; the injury doubts to John Mensah and Isaac Vorsah still linger; the German machine, as many would want to call the Philip Lahm-led side, is solid and oiled for yet another onslaught and a possible elimination of the Black Stars in the competition appear to some, a painful reality. That has caused many Ghanaian headaches and heartaches even before the match is played. On the contrary, I am fully persuaded of a Ghana place in the round of 16. And my optimism is not borne out of blind and empty patriotism but from a solid evidence of attitude, zeal and hunger for success from the youngest team at the World Cup.
