The Northern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) Mr. Hussein Sulemana has expressed concern about what he calls the bad grammatical expressions used on radio by some talk show hosts in the regional capital, Tamale. Mr. Suleimana says the phenomenon is worrying because it pollutes the minds of the listening public, particularly students in the metropolis. He made the remarks at a press briefing after organizing community agenda setting workshops in the Tamale metropolis, Nanumba North, Central Gonja and the Chereponi districts. A social auditing survey conducted by the National Commission for Civic Education in collaboration with Action-Aid Ghana on quality education delivery in the four selected districts in the Northern Region has revealed that the standard of education was on the decline. According to Mr. Sulemana Hussein, the survey was conducted to identify problems associated with low quality of, and limitations to, education for all school going age pupils in the Northern Region. He stated that teachers’ refusal to accept postings to rural communities was hampering efforts made by government and development partners, to improve the standard of education in the region. With specific reference to the Ghana Senior High School and the Dabokpa Technical and Vocational Training institute’s student riots, the NCCE Regional Director bemoaned the spate of moral decadence in Senior High Schools in the Tamale metropolis. He thus called for a concerted efforts to nip the practice in the bud, and warned students against such nefarious activities on their various compounds. Mr. Eric Nawai, Deputy Regional Director of the NCCE said the supply of furniture to basic schools in the region is inadequate. From the survey, Mr. Nawai said most teachers in the Tamale metropolis were putting up in rented houses and that rural teachers were not resident in the communities they teach. Source: Citifmonline
