The Upper West Regional Police Command in collaboration with the Regional Road Safety Committee and the Driver and Vehicular Licensing Authority (DVLA) will soon embark on a massive road safety enforcement exercise to arrest and prosecute all road traffic offenders in the region.
The move became necessary following the increasing spate of indiscipline on roads, especially within the Wa Municipality.
A statement signed by the Upper West Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Roy Amuni, said the use of unregistered motor bikes to commit crime in the region was becoming rampant.
The statement said the Police Command had also observed that road users, especially drivers and motor bike riders commute without the use of appropriate road safety measures contained in the 2004 Road Traffic Act, Act683.
Areas to be examined during the exercise include registration numbers, insurance and road worthy certificates, protective crash helmet, wrongful parking as well as driving license.
The statement said records regarding crime indicated that armed criminals resorted to the use of unregistered motorbikes as quick means of transport to commit robberies and violent crimes.
It stated that about 16 robbery cases were recorded within the first quarter of 2010.
