Member of Defense and Interior Committee in Parliament Seth Acheampong has warned the nomadic herdsmen crisis in parts of the country could spur the spread of killings by vigilante groups.
The Mpraeso MP wants government to bring a closure to the recurrent clashes between nomadic herdsmen and residents in parts of the Eastern and Ashanti regions.
“We must hold special national security meeting over this matter and bring it to an immediate attention,” he said.
Angry residents of Afirisre in Agogo Central District in the Ashanti Region recently shot an unidentified man believed to be a nomad following suspicion that the death of one of their colleagues, a farmer, was caused by herdsmen.
Other residents of Afirisre are living in fear over a reprisal attack by the nomadic herdsmen.
Clashes between the herdsman and residents of Agogo has persisted for many years. The residents blame the herdmens for destruction of their farms by cattle during grazing.
The Mpraeso MP notes “we are talking about Agogo because that has been in the front burner in news. In my constituency, days back not more than two weeks ago two young men were brutally injured by Fulani people and it has caused youthful vigilante characters to rise up in defense of their community.”
He said if mediation between residents and the herdsmen is not brokered immediately, the clashes could escalate.
