The 2010 World Cup might have long closed but for the South African Football Association, their international friendly with Ghana is geared at sustaining the euphoria that greeted Africa's first ever hosting of the competition.
Ghana's Black Stars, who were the continent's best ranked side at the World Cup after reaching the quarter-finals would on Wednesday, take on the 2010 host nation in a first game for both sides since the competition ended at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.
For South Africa, despite their first round exit, the choice of playing Ghana could be the best appreciation to their fans for their support during the month-long event, says SAFA CEO Leslie Sedibe.
“The people of South Africa deserve a thank you! We worked tirelessly to bring to our shores the Black Stars of Ghana to keep the World Cup momentum going. Wednesday night at Soccer City will be a celebration of what the African Continent has achieved in successfully hosting the best FIFA World Cup ever.
“Football lovers can brace themselves for 90 minutes of pulsating soccer and lots of musical entertainment starting at 7pm. We urge supporters to arrive early in order to be part of an exciting build up to the match. The clash against Ghana will also be used as part of the preparations for crucial African Cup of Nations qualifying match against Niger on the 4th of September 2010,” said Sedibe.
