The deputy skipper of Ghana's senior national soccer team, the Black Stars and Sunderland defender John “The Rock” Mensah says Stephen Appiah, the ex-Captain of the Black Stars is retiring from international football fulfilled, contrary to opinions that Appiah retired because of misgivings.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s sports morning show on Tuesday, John Mensah extolled the leadership qualities of Stephen Appiah and said “I still believe he is the captain of team, and we are going to miss him sorely”. When asked if he was surprised on hearing the news of Appiah's retirement, he said even though he was privy to the imminent retirement plans of Stephen Appiah, it still came as a shock to him.
It is common knowledge that the success of the current Black Stars has largely depended on unity, the oneness and sense of belonging in the Black Stars team.
John Mensah was positive when asked if he is ready to lead the Black Stars if given the chance. He said “I will gladly do so since it would be a great honour done me and I am very sure I will do a good job since it would not be my first time of playing that role”.
He however placed the team’s interest above his and said “If I am not even given the armband I will still play my heart out since it’s an honour and privilege to serve motherland Ghana in any capacity”. "The Rock” as he is affectionately called lauded the FA’s idea of a testimonial match which befits the status of a loyalist like Stephen Appiah.
Meanwhile, John Mensah confirmed to Asempa Sports that he is responding to treatment for a recent injury and hopes to be back in action soon for Sunderland and Ghana.
