France's first lady Carla Bruni has been branded a "prostitute" by Iran's hardline media after she expressed support for an Iranian woman facing death by stoning for adultery.
A report by the state news website follows an article in the hardline Kayhan newspaper which also described the third wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy as a "prostitute".
The paper, which acts as a mouthpiece for Iran's Islamic regime, accused Miss Bruni of being a hypocrite.
An editorial highlighted her chequered love live, which has included numerous relationships with high-profile celebrities.
Titled 'Prostitutes join the human rights protest' is also singled out the actress Isabelle Adjani, who has joined the calls for the release of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.
The Iranian, a 43-year-old mother of two, is accused of cheating on her husband and helping to kill him.
Bruni condemned the stoning sentence after hundreds of people from human rights organisations demonstrated in Paris to urge Iran for a change of heart.
