Polytechnic teachers across the country have begun a sit down strike. They are protesting stalled negotiations for better service conditions.
An ultimatum given by the teachers for the negotiations to resume expired Tuesday.
The Polytechnic teachers called the strike at their annual congress at Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
POTAG President Godfred Abledu tells Joy News the teachers will not return to the classroom until their demands are met.
“We decided to go on a sit down strike. Academic activities are suspended but administrative activities will go on,” he confirmed.
He explained the strike was not indefinite, adding a meeting with the Labour Commission will determine whether the strike will be an indefinite one.
He also dismissed assertions that the strike will not yield the needed results since the Polytechnic students are on vacation.
He cautioned government against exploiting the vacation situation to buy more time.
Meanwhile, the National Labour Commission has directed striking teachers at the Accra Polytechnic to resume work.
The teachers are unhappy about the process used for the appointment of a Vice-Dean and the Rector.
Public Relations Officer for the NLC Muhammed Afum tells Joy News the strike by the Accra Polytechnic teachers is illegal.
