The Ghana Football Association will not fall for the ‘employ a local coach at all cost' campaign after vice-President Fred Pappoe revealed nationality will not be a factor in the decision they will make.
The GFA is looking for a replacement for Milovan Rajevac as Ghana coach and a strong local coach lobby is emerging with Under-20 World Cup winning coach Sellas Tetteh, Aduana Stars coach Herbert Addo and David Duncan the most prominent names at the moment.
But Pappoe says the local coaches interested in coaching the Black Stars will not get a wild card to the job and must prove they are as competent as any manager interested in taking the position.
Pappoe restricting the choices available to the GFA on the basis of nationality is not appropriate.
"If we can get a competent coach from Afghanistan or Russia within the resources we can afford then we will employ him," he said. "If we can find a coach from within Ghana competent enough to do the job then we will give him the responsibility. What we will not do is to set criteria based on nationality or colour because I think that will be debasing the issue."
The last local coach to have handled the Black Stars was Sellas Tetteh when he took charge of the first phase of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup guiding the side to wins over Libya, Lesotho and Swaziland before he was replaced by Milovan Rajevac.
