A Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana Faculty of Law has warned of serious consequences if the judgement of the Supreme Court on the voters' register is not fully implemented.
Speaking on Joy FM and MultiTV's news analysis programme, Newsfile on Saturday, Dr. Opoku Adusei indicated that the outcome of the election could be declared null and void by the highest court of the land if the judgement is not implemented.
The Supreme Court on Thursday, May 5, ordered the Electoral Commission to delete from the electoral roll names of persons who have not established qualification to be on the register. This includes deceased persons, minors, and persons who registered with NHIA cards.
After receiving a certified copy of the judgement, the Commission in its response assured the general public that it is committed to cleaning the electoral roll.
It said amongst other things that it would use the exhibition process to clean the register.
"In accordance with the provisions of CI 91, Registered Voters will be given the opportunity to verify their registration details at all polling centres nationwide with the use of verification machines."
But Dr Opoku Adusei said if there is sufficient evidence that the Commission has failed to clean the electoral roll before the elections, it could cause the highest court to stop the election entirely or declare outcome void "at the end of it all."
On the same platform, the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini urged the EC to ensure that an opportunity is created for citizens whose names will be taken off the roll for using the National Health Insurance cards to re-register.
