Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Prof. Adebowale Adefuye, has described former US envoy to Nigeria, Mr. John Campbell, as "an attention-seeking and disingenuous prophet of doom", following his latest postulation that next year's election would certainly lead to chaos.
Campbell had in a memo titled: "Contingency Planning Memorandum No. 9", to the Center for Preventive Action (CPA) Contingency Roundtable series, released by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) on Tuesday, painted a bleak post-election 2011 picture, which he said, head or tail, would end in the destabilisation of the country. He also listed the potential implications and policy options available to US.
The Contingency Roundtable series, which the memo was channeled to, seeks to organise focused discussions on plausible short-to-medium term contingencies that could seriously threaten US interests.
Such contingency meeting topics range from specific states or regions of concern to more thematic issues and draw on the expertise of government and non-government experts with the goal of raising awareness of US government officials and the expert community to potential crises. It also generates practical policy options to lessen the likelihood of the contingency, while also reducing the negative consequences should it occur.
But in a strong-worded reaction titled: "Nigeria and Campbell", Adefuye noted that the former US envoy seems to have made up his mind that whichever way next year's election goes, Nigeria would implode, but said "he is in for a shocker".
"The simple truth is that we Nigerians have made up our mind to conduct a free, fair and credible election that will command local and international acceptance.
To this end, we have put in place an Independent Electoral Commission headed by individuals of proven integrity and who have been working night and day to deliver credible results. Mischievous and ill digested comments like that of Campbell will not distract them," he said.
The envoy said Campbell's memo, which is coming barely two weeks after he posited a similar worst case scenario in his upcoming book, is based on half truths, contradictory statements, serious bias, ignorance and mischievous intentions.
"A greater part of the article by Campbell sounded more like a journey into fantasy land as to how after the election there would be communal violence, breakdown of law and order, and a possible coup. He then went on to pontificate on the consequences to UN peace effort and the United States global political, and economic objectives with particular reference to Africa.
"Nigerians are not unaware of their leadership role in Africa and our responsibility in creating a politically stable Nigeria which will
promote and encourage the sustainance of democracy, good governance, rule of law, and human rights in Africa. This is why we are resolved to get it right this time regardless of John Campbell and his ilk", he said.
The Nigerian diplomat further said what worries him is that he is convinced that Campbell knows that some of his assumptions, facts and hypothesis are wrong. While noting that he would not expect a man who had served as ambassador to a country to wish that country so ill, Adefuye said most ambassadors look with favour and wish the best for countries where they have been priviledged to serve.
The Nigerian envoy said: "This is why some of John Campbell's colleagues who have served in Nigeria have been shocked and astounded by his damaging articles, the timing of which has been so insensitive and mischievous. It is the responsibility of the United States government to choose whoever they like as the ambassador to Nigeria. But our prayer is that, may the like of John Campbell never come our way again."
