The Mayor of Accra, Mr Alfred Vanderpuije says 373 classrooms and 10,000 furniture are currently being constructed to help abolish the shift system in basic schools. Speaking at the launch of The Young Mayor reality show Thursday at the Travel Xpress International Hotel in Accra, the Mayor said all school children in the metropolis starting from the new academic year will have the regular eight hours of instruction instead of the four hours under the shift system. This he said was part of President Mills' ‘Better Ghana Agenda’ which seeks to streamline the educational system in the metropolis and also make sure school children get the required attention in school. The Young Mayor reality show is an initiative of JC Media and it is to galvanise ideas and solutions to tackle issues affecting the Metropolis. Fourteen contestants have been selected to partake in an intensive brainstorming and fun-filled activities that will be aired on TV Africa on Saturdays. The ultimate winner of the reality show will work closely with a specific mayor for 30 days. With an allocated seed money, the winner will help the Mayor come up with ideas to tackle some of the challenges the Metropolis is facing. Areas to be dealt with include: sanitation, health, traffic situations, education, street children, hawking among others. The launch was attended by Kwame Banwell, CEO of JC Media and Solomon Agyeman Duah, Communications Manager of Zoomlion who are also sponsors of the reality show. Source: Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
