The Executive Director of the School Feeding Programme says he has dissolved procurement committees responsible for purchasing foodstuffs and other items in all 138 districts of the country.
At a news conference to respond to accusations of misappropriation of funds earmarked for the payment of cooks, Dr. Amoako Tuffour said the change in the procurement structure was aimed at preventing members of the committees from making profits on their purchases as was the case presently.
NDC MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini had accused the secretariat of misappropriating some three billion cedis.
Dr. Tuffuor denied the allegations and said effective June 1, procurement would be done by the caterers to ensure transparency.
Dr. Tuffuor also pledged to refund all arrears to caterers and explained that the problem of arrears came about because District Chief Executives delayed in disbursing funds.
Dr. Tuffuor said members of procurement committees would become part of the district implementation committee to ensure that food served the school children was of the highest quality.
