Alan Hansen has labelled Liverpool players a "disgrace" after the team’s shock 2-1 defeat against Blackpool on Sunday.
The former Anfield defender, who is still regarded a Liverpool legend, believes the team showed a total lack of character against the Seasiders — as they slipped to their third defeat of the season in the league, and their first at home.
Criticism has been directed at a number of people, with manager Roy Hodgson and the club’s American owners bearing the brunt of the bad feeling, but Hansen feels the team has to shoulder much of the responsibility.
The Scot believes the players have to show more resolve to haul the club out of their current predicament. The club is in the relegation positions after the weekend’s defeat and Hansen says this is down to the team.
"Forget about history and tradition, forget about the owners, forget about the manager – that defeat against Blackpool is all about the players," Hansen said.
"If that performance had come when they were at the top of the league it would have been terrible, but to come when they were in the bottom three, it’s a disgrace."
Hodgson has admitted his side faces a tough task to galvanise themselves and get their season back on track, and after Hansen's condemnation some of the first team are admitting they need to play with more backbone.
Striker Dirk Kuyt apologised to the club after the loss, admitting the performance was one of the most difficult to swallow.
He said: "It was really, really disappointing. It’s probably one of the hardest defeats I’ve had to take since I’ve been here and we’re sorry for the fans.
"The first thing we have got to do is make sure we start winning games again and then we can begin to take things from there."
