The Black Stars of Ghana were wanton in their approach to Sunday’s African Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan, playing an uninspiring game before thousands of fans at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi.
The goalless game also saw the Stars, lead marksman, Asamoah Gyan, largely anonymous in this game, also seeing red in the second half for unsporting behaviour after he hurled an opponent down.
So ordinary were the Black Stars they had exhausted their substitutions shortly after the break as coach Kwasi Appiah juggled his charges in the hope that at least one of them could prove extraordinary. It never was to be, and left the more determined Sudanese ruing their preference for a too defensive game at the expense of a rare opportunity to overrun the Black Stars.
The draw leaves Ghana on top of Group I with four points, same as Sudan. Ghana has three goals against two by Sudan.
Elsewhere in Group G, Niger beat African champions Egypt by a lone goal in Niamey, while Benin, playing away in Rwanda on Saturday stunned their hosts by 3:0 in their Group H clash.
