The Black Stars lame performance against Sudan yesterday has re-ignited debates on the streets over whether an indigenous coach should be handed the substantive job. Ex-international Akwasi Appiah was been handed temporary charge of the team for the 2012 Africa Cup Nations qualifier which ended in a disappointing goalless draw at the Baba Yara Stadium. The Ghana Football Association is refusing to be drawn on speculations that the unimpressive display by the Black Stars could play a key role in who becomes the next coach of the national team. Over 100 coaches have applied for the job which was left vacant following the departure of Milovan Rajevac. Football Association Vice President Fred Pappoe who doubles as chairman of the Black Stars management committee said the outcome of yesterday’s match will not play a role in deciding the next coach of the team. He said although the result was disappointing, “this is football, these kinds of things happen.” Caretaker coach Akwasi Appiah praised his side for a stirred up second half performance and told Joy Sports he didn’t disappoint himself. He said he varied his tactics of play at various stages of the game to assess how the players would cope. The stated he had anticipated the game against Sudan to be a difficult one and that he was not surprised. Ex-Black Stars striker Augustine Arhinful believes Sunday’s game should not be used as a yard stick to judge the competence of Akwasi Appiah. He expressed optimism that given time and support, the coach will prove his worth. Captain John Mensah who struggled to cope with the pace of the game admitted the Black Stars were second best against Sudan. Football fans who watched the game could not hide their disappointment when they spoke to Joy Sports. Despite sharing points with Sudan at home, Ghana still top Group I with four points and goal difference of plus three.
