The Chairman of the Works and Housing Committee of Parliament has blamed local authorities for the perennial Accra flooding.

David Tetteh Assuming believes flooding in Accra can be reduced if the authorities enforce the laws on sanitation and siting of buildings.

Over a 150 lives were lost and several properties destroyed after the capital city got flooded in June last year.

Many Ghanaians, especially residents of flood-prone areas fear Accra will be flooded this year as the season approaches.

Improper planning of the city, choked drains, and generally poor drainage systems in the city have been blamed for the floods.

But  David Tetteh Assuming  is convinced enforcement of laws on sanitation and siting of buildings will improve discipline in the city.

The MP said: 'enforcement of the law is not taken to the level it should go...people are still sleeping on their jobs. We don't need the President to come and tell us to this or not to do this.'

He called on Ghanaians to distill choked gutters and put in place measures to help reduce the floods this year.
