The Team leader of Ghana Decides, a social media project by Blogging Ghana says the Inspector General of Police (IGP) must consider establishing a police post on social media instead of blocking it on election day.

According to Kinna Likimani, the establishment of the police post on social media will rather help the police in monitoring social media users instead of shutting it down.

“People have established schools, businesses and companies on social media which I think the IGP must rather consider same instead of blocking it outright on election day” Mr Likimani said. 

Mr Likimani was speaking Monday on Adom FM’s current affairs “Burning Issues” programme hosted by Listowell Kwadwo Fordjour on a consideration by the IGP to block social media on election day.

The Inspector General of Police, John Kudalor recently revealed that his outfit is considering shutting down social media on November 6 and 7 as part of measures to ensure security during the polls.

The IGP said the move would enable the police in Ghana to counter the actions of potential “troublemakers” who might compromise security operations during the elections.

Some key stakeholders and experts have since criticized the IGP, describing the move as unnecessary and infringement on people’s right.

But the IGP in response said nothing can stop him from blocking social media if the need arises.

Kinna Likimani disagrees with the IGP. She is of the view that social media, if used properly, can yield positive results.

“The IGP got it wrong with his proposal of blocking social media on social media on before, during elections day but he must look for mechanism of controlling it” the social media stressed.

“The police administration must also intensify their presence on social media to monitor issues concerning the nation’s security” Kinna Likimani said.

She admitted that sometimes it’s disturbing with the kind of messages some people post on the internet but that does not mean that it should be blocked.
