After one week of expressing displeasure at the assessment of their performances in the media, Members of Parliament (MPs) Tuesday descended heavily on the Africawatch magazine for daring to assess them in Parliament. The MPs claim the magazine’s work is not only uninformed, but also has the potential to affect their political fortunes in 2012. Most of them including the Speaker herself are not happy with the grades given them in the magazine. Their conclusion is that the magazine is in contempt of parliament. The Speaker, Mrs Joyce Bamford Addo has therefore referred the editor of the magazine to the Privileges Committee of Parliament. “Your constituents have faith and confidence in you and elected you. Everybody is assessed every four years. Let us go back to our constituencies and be assessed, not somebody in the city,” Majority Leader, Cletus Avoka said. “Let me go back to Zebilla and let them assess me there and you will see that I would have scored A+++,” the Zebilla MP said. But MP for Gyaman South, Afful Maama, who was graded F holds a different view. He said whiles disagreeing with the editor of the Africawatch magazine, he also disagreed with the decision to haul him before the House’s Privileges Committee. For him, as public figures, MPs should expect to be judged by the public. After an hour of debate, Speaker, Joyce Bamford-Addo had the final word. She said she will appeal against the B+ given her because she thinks she deserved a better grade than that.
