Ex-Black Queens left back Mavis Danso has thrown the gauntlet challenging the team’s officials to eschew favoritism in player selection. She expressed gross discontent on Happy FM's “Where are they?” programme regarding the current crop of players in camp preparing for the African Women Championship slated for South Africa, stating emphatically that she has little faith in the team. Mavis, currently in Virginia in the USA working in a financial institution pointed out that: “If the technical men continue to rely on favouritism in player selection and they don’t use the right criteria in player selection, we will continue to face problems.” The player who is combining accountancy with a coaching course in the States also described the Queens Group as dicey taking into cognizance its inadequate preparation for the biennial African women championship. “I know it will be a difficult task for the Queens considering the strength of their opponents, but I pray that they sail through the group stages,” added Mavis. She, however, praised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) copiously for the introduction of the juvenile national teams (U-17/U-20). According to her, that will ensure a smooth takeover from the existing Queens by the younger generation as old age sets in. Mavis has admonished the younger generation to combine education and football since that will offer them several opportunities, especially should they get the chance to play outside the country. She has bemoaned the non-existence of a planned league stating that assembling players few months to competitions would not help. To Mavis, the Queens failure to make it in the African championship and eventually qualify for the World Cup will have adverse effect on the team. A product of the Robert Morris College in Chicago, US, Mavis recollects with mixed feelings the Queens defeat to their arch-rivals, the Falcons of Nigeria which denied them qualification for the 2006 Olympics.
