The Ghana Refugee Board (GRB) has registered its dissatisfaction over the challenges refugees in the country are facing.
According to the Eligibility Officer at the GRB, Doris Tagoe, the refugees, who cut across Africa and beyond, are facing difficulties in integrating into the Ghanaian society, noting they are denied basic access to opportunities in the country.
“It is a bit difficult because it looks like people are not educated or have enough information that refugees live in our midst and they are supposed to access services and protection just as Ghanaians,” she said.
Speaking to Joynews on June 20, during the International Refugee Day, the GRB officer said Ghana currently has a little over 19, 000 refugees and Asylum seekers.
She explained, “When you say refugees and Asylum seekers [they are] people who apply for Asylum [and] are recognised through a process as refugees.”
“Some people have been recognised as refugees and some are still pending as Asylum seekers and they live in our various camps in Ghana,” she added.
She averred if the refugees are not helped by Ghanaians to adapt to the situation in the country, they will end up facing all manner of hardship which could result in their ultimate death, saying things must change.
Listing some of the challenges, Doris Tagoe said some of the refugees have challenges in terms of accessing job opportunities and other social services in Ghana.
She advocated for an increased education in the country to help turn the current situation around.
