About 19 houses at Nakpanduri in the Bunkprugu-Yunyoo District of the Northern region are said to have been burnt in a special police operation yesterday to smoke out jail breaker and cop killer Johnson Kombian.
Residents who complained of brutalization and undue searches said about a hundred armed police descended on the town firing indiscriminately before arresting an unspecified number of people.
An Assemblyman for Nakpanduri, Alhassan Moferi told Joy News he had to hide from the rampaging police “because they could just blast you with a bullet.”
“Bullets were raining in Nakpanduri. When you come you will see exhibits,” he stated.
Mr. Moferi claimed teachers, farmers and some old men were picked up by the police. “We are in a cemetery", he added.
The police have admitted there may be some collateral damage as a result of the operation.
The Director of Police Public Relations, Kwesi Fori however maintained everything the police did was measured and in accordance with law.
“We are not there for violent purposes, our task there is to [apprehend] that criminal who has taken upon himself to kill two innocent policemen and shot two others.”
