A new teachers' association is being established in the country under the name, United Teacher's Movement of Ghana (UTMOG) with its headquarters at Winneba.
In its first newsletter which was presented to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) by its General Secretary Mr Antwi Boseako Gyan, the movement claimed it's aim was not to disintegrate any existing teacher's associations or organizations but to serve as an additional pressure group in seeking the interest and welfare of teachers.
The movement claimed it would serve as a pressure group alongside existing organizations to fight for the betterment of teachers by drawing government attention to the problems facing teachers and help shape government policies on education.
The newsletter said the movement would help raise the image and dignity of the teaching profession as to attract interested persons into the profession.
The Interim President of the movement, Mr Haruna Wiredu, a student of the University of Education, Winneba said, members were touring teacher training colleges and schools in the country to recruit members and soon regional offices would be establish throughout the country.
He said currently the movement had 1,000 registered members but expressed the hope that by the time the officers on the regional tour returned to base, the movement could boast of a large membership.
