The Christian Council of Ghana has condemned what it describes as a vile  attack on the personality of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Madam Charlotte Osei, by some political functionaries.

The attack sought to tarnish the reputation Madam Charlotte Osei, accusing her with absolutely no basis and evidence that she gained the position by granting sexual favours.

Speaking on the issue, General, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong said in line with an earlier communiqué with the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, the CCG condemns the repugnant, unwarranted and the unsubstantiated attack on the personality of the EC Chair.

The Commission since the resumption of multi-party democracy in 1992 has conducted one of the most credible elections in the West African Sub-Region, Mrs Osei and her commissioners should, therefore, be given the needed support to conduct the 2016 elections in a fair, peaceful and transparent manner.

Rev Opuni-Frimpong asked politicians to campaign on issues and desist from unacceptable attacks on the persons of opponents and other well-meaning Ghanaians.

Political parties from which such persons belong, should condemn and dissociate themselves from their utterances and where possible sanction them to serve as a deterrent to other members and to also send a clear message to the electorate about their commitment to peace and justice.

The General Secretary also condemned reports indicating followers of a political party is being asked to riot shall the Electoral commission declare a party they do not favour winner of the elections.

According to him, the country has a solid and reputable judicial system where redress can be sought.

In the event, any party is unhappy with the result or has any reason to believe the outcome of the 2016 elections is not credible, all parties should utilize the judicial system and not resort to violence.

If the country is destroyed by our actions, inactions and words, there will be no Ghana for the politicians struggling for power to govern.

Rev Opuni-Frimpong called on political parties to bring members who preach violence to order, the security agencies must also act swiftly and decisively to stem the tide and we call on all Ghanaians to condemn and dissociate themselves from such pronouncements that seek to throw our a peaceful country into chaos.
