The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) has urged the media to act responsibly as the nation marches into the November 2016 polls.
President of GIBA, Akwasi Agyeman said the media play such a crucial role in Ghana’s democracy for it to be sacrificed on the altar of selfish ambitions.
Mr Agyeman made this call when he addressed members of the Association at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Kumasi on Thursday, June 23, 2016.
The meeting brought GIBA member stations from all the ten regions together to discuss pertinent issues affecting the Association and the Industry in general.
Without mincing words, GIBA head cautioned broadcasters in the country to be careful in their reportage especially at this moment in the history of the country.
He condemned the use of foul language in clear terms, noting, unsubstantial reportage on the airwaves should be done away with.
He called on all member stations to help promote an issue-based campaign period in the lead up to the elections.
The meeting saw AGM, the Executive Council and some members of GIBA paying a courtesy call on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia palace.
Addressing the Associations, Otumfuo expressed her disappointment about some emotional discussions entertained by media houses.
He challenged media practitioners to use their platforms to educate Ghanaians and help them push the interest of the nation ahead of personal ambitions.
GIBA is due to launch its code of conduct to regulate the November polls in July 2016.
