Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has described as unproductive and unfortunate the misuse of ICT to denigrate people and institutions.
Social media in recent times have been flooded with photoshopped images of personalities and sometimes institutions that portray negative messages and defame them.
Addressing the graduating class of the 50th congregation of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Asantehene expressed worry such mischievous intents often abuse the human rights of such persons.
“The report of abuse of human rights and denigrating the integrity of fellow human beings and institutions of higher repute through the misapplication of IT have become common. This is very unfortunate and unproductive,” he lamented.
According to him, this shows the extent at which the moral values of the Ghanaian youth have fallen to.
For him, while individual company or platforms responsibility is paramount, the ethical challenges surrounding human rights and ICT must be addressed through a multi-stakeholder approach.
“Developing an effective and enduring solutions requires the cooperation of a wide range of stakeholders. ICT must become the carrier of an expanded educational system that makes it possible for learners to acquire the skills needed to function in the global economy,” Asantehene suggested.
The Asantehene added that it behoves on everyone to ensure that the youth do not go wayward and destroy the dignity of our society and its value with ICT.
The congregation saw a total of 8,081 students graduating including 51 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) students.
To the graduating class, Otumfuo Osei Tutu the second advised that the era of post-graduate guaranteed employment was long gone and that these times call for creativity, innovation and can-do spirit- these are essential ingredients to success.
