Organized labour is doubtful government’s intended privatization of Ghana’s power distributor will address the country’s power challenges.
Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Kofi Asamoah says the labour union will next month state its stand on the future of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
He was speaking at the 11th quadrennial delegates’ conference of the Public Utility Workers Union in Kumasi.
Even before the TUC declares its position on the concession proposal, Dr Asamoah is convinced the solution does not lie in privatization.
“Government should come out and tell us where the concessions have worked, otherwise, our checks on the African continent and a few external countries outside the Africa countries have shown that the concession or the concessionaire or whatever they call it has not worked as being it is being propagated,” he said.
“We stated repeatedly that it would be a landmark privatization what they [government] wants to do ECG whose consequences would be catastrophic,” he said.
Delegates to the conference will discuss ways to ensure efficient and reliable service delivery in the sector.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, John Alexander Ackon urged organised labour to engage in social dialogue, especially for utilities.
“This will enable us to achieve a common goal of extended access to communities. Also, improved access by utility services provides more income opportunities and help benefit communities while promoting their productivity,” he said.
