Lawyer for the New Patriotic Party parliamentary candidate who is being prosecuted for stealing is accusing the Attorney General's Department of stifling justice.
Michael Attah Dadzie says the department has for a year now failed to prosecute the case, a situation which has left his client distraught.
Bright Wereko-Brobbey, parliamentary aspirant for Hemang lower Denkyira Constituency is standing trial for aiding and abetting in the theft of 1201 bags of fertilizer in 2015 for his primaries. He has denied the claim and is in court arguing his defence.
According to his lawyer, for a year now, the Attorney General has been employing delay tactics in prosecuting the case.
At the circuit court in Cape Coast Tuesday, scores of supporters of the parliamentary candidate crowded the court expecting judgment but were slapped with news that the AG’s department has introduced a fresh and compelling evidence.
This, lawyer Michael Attah Dadzie believes is unacceptable. He is convinced the delay by the AG is deliberate and aimed at disqualifying the candidate from contesting the 2016 parliamentary elections.
He told Joy News the AG is stifling the course of justice.
"What new information has the AG uncovered that she could not have gathered in the last year?" he asked in an interview with Joy News.
He said he is waiting for a fiat said to have been issued by Attorney General but which has not been brought to court.
Michael Attah Dadzie said it is an emotional torture for his client to move around for over a year with a theft charge hanging around his neck and yet does not have the opportunity to clear his name.
"Whatever measure you used today, same will be used tomorrow against you," he said, reminding the Attorney General that political power is transient and does last forever.
