Police in Elmina in the Central Region are holding eight suspects in custody over their alleged involvement of what is suspected to be crude oil smuggling.
The eight, according to Central Regional Police PRO Cpl. Raymond Asaba, include the driver of a tanker and a man who is claiming ownership of the crude.
Cpl. Raymond Asaba said the arrest followed a tip-off of a police patrol team that some fishermen were offloading crude oil from canoes at the beach.
One of the canoes, according to Joy FM’s Central Regional correspondent, Richard Kojo Nyarko, bore the inscription, “Confidence in Jesus – Malouda.”
He said the police were yet to ascertain the source of the crude oil, however the tanker driver claimed he had come from nearby Saltpond, also in the Central Region, to collect the oil.
According to Cpl. Raymond Asaba, the suspects are cooperating with police investigators who are digging for more information. The police were not sure what offence the suspects faced, however Cpl. Raymond Asaba believed they had committed a crime.
