A high court in Accra has placed an interim injunction on a planned demolition exercise by the Ga South Municipal Assembly at Oblogo ITS area near Weija.
The residents association filed an ex-parte motion for an order for interlocutory injunction which was granted by the court effective 14th December, 2010.
The Assembly has issued notices for the residents to vacate the area and look for alternative places to allow the demolishing exercise but the residents have put up a united resistance. They are challenging the basis for the exercise by the assembly, since they claim they duly acquired the land from the Chief of Weija while the same assembly had granted building permits to some of them. The rest claimed to have paid up and awaiting building permits from the assembly.
Chairman for the Oblogo residents association, Richard Asare, told Asempa News that the situation there could lead to a civil strife as some youth are mobilizing to resist at all cost, any moves by the assembly to demolish any structure there.
Municipal Engineer Mr. Anthony Kwashie Gafifie said the assembly was getting prepared to embark on the exercise.
According to Mr. Gafifie, the assembly has the full backing of the government to pull down all illegal structures on the land.
He said his outfit had enough documentary evidence to prove that the owners of the property had encroached on government land.
He stated that if the residents had done a proper search before purchasing the land, they would have found out that it had been acquired by the government.
