He is best known as Agya Koo, otherwise his parents christened him Kofi Adu and clearly, he has cemented his name in the local movie industry as undoubtedly, the best there is. Industry watchers claim Agya Koo's abilities and skills on set know no bounds. The rib-cracking heavyweight actor stole the hearts of many at the maiden edition of what organisers hope to institutionalise as the main event to recognise and reward excellence in the Ghanaian movie industry, Ghana Movie Awards. He was crowned the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Local Language) for the movie Ama Ghana. It was a night that saw almost all the crème de la crème of what the Ghanaian movie industry has got to offer under-one-roof. Ably supporting the Ghanaian stars were some of the big names the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood, has got to offer, including Genevieve Nnaji and Segun Arinze. The awards event at the Accra International Conference Centre Saturday night, December 25, saw the crowing of personalities who have distinguished themselves in the industry over the past years. There were as many as 25 categories of awards. The night’s big winners included Shirley Frimpong-Manso’s A Sting in a Tale and Leila Djansi’s Sinking Sands. A Sting in a Tale bagged five awards while Sinking Sands took home four awards. The night was not only just about movies, of course the stars too came to dance and Rana, Mimi, Nana Boroo, 4X4 and 55 were on hand to rock the house. The night also had its fair share of emotions as the late Bob J, who passed away on December 12, was awarded posthumously as the Best Cinematographer. The Conference Centre was held in grief (and some cried openly) as he was honoured with a standing ovation. The night’s topmost prize, Zotye SUV was to be awarded to the Best Actor and Actress but organisers say the Movie Awards jury will hold a later sitting to decide the winner before the prize will be handed out.
