Women representation in the Asante-Akim South District Assembly has dropped despite the intensive public education campaign to increase their numbers ahead of the recently held District Level polls.
Out of the 18 women who put themselves up as candidates, only three were elected to the 46-member assembly. The last assembly recorded five women.
Mr Joseph Appiagyei, District Electoral Officer, told the Ghana News Agency at Juaso that eight out of the 42 former members were re-elected.
Mr E.V. Boadu of the District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education said the low representation of women in the assembly was disheartening, hence the need for hard work to change the situation.
He said it was important that women became an effective part of the political decision-making at all levels.Source: GNA
