The Gonja Traditional Council has served notice it will go all the way to the Supreme Court to make its case for Mahama Abdulai Jinapor to be removed as chief of Buipe. Last week the High Court in Tamale ruled that the embattled Buipewura, was illegally deskinned by the Gonja Traditional Council and should be reinstated. But the Council has appealed the court ruling, saying it is convinced the judgment was against the weight of the argument adduced by the Council in support of its case. Spokesperson for the Council, Doliwura AMS Zacharia said the council believes justice has not been served in the case. He said the conduct of Abdulai Jinapor which precipitated his deskinment amounted to going to war with the people of Gonjaland which is enough grounds to remove a chief from office. Last year the Buipewura was accused of showing gross insubordination and disrespect to the Overlord of Gonja and the other chiefs by refusing to yield to appeals to forgive a sub-chief he (Jinapor) sanctioned. The Yagbonwura and the other chiefs had prevailed on the Buipe chief to rescind his decision to deskin a sub-chief but Mr Jinapor stood his grounds, arguing the sub-chief had offended him by failing to pay homage. His intransigence infuriated Yagbonwura Tuntumba Borisa Jakpa and the other chiefs who consequently convened a meeting at which they deskinned the Buipe chief but Abdulai Jinapor went to court to challenge the decision. Even though the court ruled in his favour, the Gonja Traditional Council says his belligerent position amounted to going to war with Gonjas and he cannot be allowed to continue as a Buipe chief. A spokesperson for Abdulai Jinapor, Dr Ahamed Jinapor disagreed, saying Buipe was an autonomous area that should not be subjugated by the traditional council. He maintained the Buipewura was willing to reconcile with the Gonja Traditional Council for the overall development of the area. Source: Joy News/Ghana
