Civil society groups will hold a grand debate today on the proposal for the establishment of a union government for Africa ahead of next month's AU summit.
The debate which is on the topic ‘Is Africa ready for the United States of Africa,' is to provide food for thought for the continent's leaders when they meet in Accra next month.
Already, civil society groups from across the country have issued a communiqué after a two-day conference in Accra declaring support for the proposed Union government for Africa.
They have also served notice they will prevail upon their governments to adopt the proposal at the end of the Summit to ensure unity on the continent.
The Secretary General of the Pan-African Movement, Dr. Tajudeen Abdul Raheem says he will be speaking in favour of the motion because the spirit of Ghana's founding president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah will not forgive the continent if his dream of a united Africa does not become a reality.
Abdul Raheem said African leaders have a huge credibility problem and should use the Summit to prove themselves, as well as agree to erase stringent visa requirements from across their frontiers.
Meanwhile newspaper publications on Monday have warned the Summit and its participants to guard against using the forum to advance the desires of any individual.
The Public Agenda, The Moon and The Independent newspapers all suggest that Libyan leader, Muamar Ghadaffi has a vested interest in assuming the presidency of the continental government and will be pushing that agenda on all fronts.
