The leadership crisis in the People’s National Convention is deepening as the group calling itself the Interim Management Committee intends to organize an emergency congress to elect new national executives of the party.
A statement signed by Basili Wasai, Chairman of the IMC says they have overwhelming endorsement from the party’s Council of Elders and regional chairmen.
Basili Wasai told Joy News, former presidential candidate Dr Edward Mahama breached the party’s constitution by contesting Presidential elections more than twice.
“What we want is that Dr Mahama should not present himself as the leader of the party, Ahmed Ramadan should not present himself as the chairman of the party, Bernard Mornah should not pose as the General Secretary of the party,” he asserted.
But the party’s General Secretary, Bernard Mornah says the IMC has no legitimacy.
“Had Dr Mahama won the 2008 elections, would they be making such pronouncements today? he asked.
Mr Mornah maintained the four-time presidential candidate of the PNC was duly elected at a congress and that another congress at which new national officers will be elected will be organized by the current executive and not the so-called IMC.
He dismissed the claims by the IMC that they have overwhelming endorsements from various caucuses of the party saying many regional branches of the PNC had dissociated themselves from position of the IMC.
