New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman has denied suggestions that the party is considering reducing the filing fees for the NPP Parliamentary Primary.
The Daily Guide in its Friday, February 4, 2011 edition featured a story titled, NPP To Cut Filing Fee, where it was reported that the NPP had reconsidered its decision to charge GH¢16,000 as filing fees for their Parliamentary Primaries.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, the NPP Chairman said that there has been a lot of misinformation about the party’s decision to charge GH¢16,000 and is therefore engaged in a nationwide tour to educate its members on the reasons for that charge.
“There’s been a lot of misinformation about the fee structure and why we want to charge the fees, so we are going round and explaining to our members what it is all about,” he said.
Citing some reasons, he said there was the need to raise funds for its prospective candidates in order to ensure a good campaign and also to prevent candidates from siphoning allocated funds, which was the case when they received sponsorship from individuals.
He said he had not heard the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, who was also quoted by the paper as saying the party would reduce the charge if the NPP faithful complained about it, make any such comments.
Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey also played down comparisons between his party’s filing fees and that of the New Democratic Congress’ (NDC), which has been pegged at GH¢2,000, saying, “they know what they are getting from their incumbency…We know that we are in opposition, [therefore] we are responsible for ourselves.”
