Results of the recently held district level elections as released by the Electoral Commission paint a sorry picture of the performance of women in the elections.Out of the 6,103 assembly members elected, only 412 were women, representing a mere less than 10 percent of the number of new assembly members.Joy News’ Eric Ahianyo who analysed the results said the performance of the women was a slap in the face of gender advocates who have captained tirelessly for more women participation in governance at the various district assemblies.General turnout was only 35.29 percent. At the Unit committee level, 24,319 males won the elections compared with 2,891 females across the country.Public Affairs Director at the Electoral Commission, Christian Owusu Pare also told Joy News there were 38 cases of split votes.Of these 23 were at the unit committee level and 15 for District Assemblies.Christian Owusu Pare said the Electoral Commission has fixed next Tuesday, February 15 for the rerun of the elections.Source: Joy News/Ghana
