Nana Akufo-Addo, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), was yesterday compelled to leave a scheduled meeting with party members midway at the Ascension Hall of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at Koforidua to meet with pupils who had swarmed the meeting venue chanting his name and expressing their desire to see him. Nana Akufo-Addo came out of the hall to acknowledge cheers of "Nana O", "Nana O" from the Presbyterian Primary School children. Nana Akufo-Addo advised them to be obedient and also learn very hard to enable them to achieve their dreams in future. He said the NPP was fighting to lay a good foundation for them. Addressing the party meeting later, Nana Akufo-Addo warned prospective parliamentary candidates who wanted to contest the primaries to desist from using his name in pursuing their ambitions. He said that any such move would not augur well for the unity of the party which is very crucial for victory 2012. He said anybody who would go to the delegates saying that he was "Nana's man" should not be taken serious. "It was the parliamentary process that caused us victory in 2008 and this time round we want the process to be very open, transparent, fair and healthy," he said. He asked prospective candidates to critically examine themselves well before deciding to pay the 16,000 Ghana cedis to contest the primaries because when anybody lost, he or she should first think about the general interest of the party first and not do anything to undermine the unity of the party, adding "losing the parliamentary primary docs not mean you cannot be of any use to the party in other capacities." He said the party should demonstrate to the whole country through the parliamentary process that the NPP was ready to take over the reins of government in 2012. He asked parliamentary aspirants to conduct decent campaign devoid of character assassinations which could divide the ranks of supporters. The issue of the filing fee which has been pegged at 16,000 Ghana cedis became a major subject of debate which the general secretary of the party took time to explain. According to Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie, the filing fee was carefully planned because the party realised that it needed to support all parliamentary candidates with resources to campaign effectively.
