Some supporters of the New Patriotic Party say they are inspired and highly motivated by recent “all-die-be-die” comments by their flag bearer.
Nana Akufo-Addo has been vilified and hailed with equal measure by critics and supporters alike when he charged party faithfuls to be vigilant and resist any form of intimidation from officials of the ruling party.
Nana Addo said the NPP was founded by courageous men, contrary to perceptions that Akans within the party are cowards and will run helter skelter at the least provocation and intimidation.
He said the supporters must resist any form of intimidation in the 2012 elections even to the point of death, declaring, “all-die-be-die.”
But NDC officials have condemned the comments. Local Government Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has referred to it as “buffoonery” whilst the party’s scribe Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has branded Nana Addo as a war monger.
Followers of the NPP have also been united in the defence of the comments. They say they have suffered enough harassment and brutality under president John Mills with the police looking on helplessly.
They have now resolved to defend themselves in the face of future attacks.
But the Spokesperson of the NPP youth in the Upper East Region Abraham Bashiru said the comments have inspired and motivated them.
“We are highly inspired by the statement that Nana Addo made. Nana Addo has motivated us because he has been a leader; a freedom fighter; a democrat; somebody who has spent the rest of his life fighting for democracy and respect for fundamental human rights and dignity in this country."
He dismissed assertion that the comments were inflammatory.
“There are so many people who are chanting and running riot because they have misunderstood Nana Addo. Being a democrat, Nana Addo will never advise anybody to go and fight anybody," he said.
He explained the comments were to advise the party supporters to defend themselves if attacked and not to initiate attacks.
He cited examples of NDC footsoldiers who he said were visiting mayhem on Regional Ministers, DCEs, asking if the NDC could visit mayhem on their own people, what will they not do to their opponents.
“Former Regional Minister Hon. Khalid was beaten [up] by NDC footsoldiers, chased out of the office and contract documents were burnt. DCEs are in exile in Gushiegu, Walewale etc.
“Clearly if these people could demonstrate these kind of violent acts on even their own members, what will they not do to us,” he quizzed.
